Tips for your visit to Baily’s Cabin
Grocery Store: Once you reach the cabin, grocery options are a minimum of a half hour away in Orderville or 45 minutes away in Kanab. You can also travel through the park to Springdale for groceries. Springdale is an hour away depending on traffic through the park. I highly recommend picking up groceries prior to getting to the cabin. Remember to pick up drinking water. The cabin water is potable but the water is stored in a water tank and treated lightly with chlorine. There is a link below for a google map showing grocery options in the area.
Hiking from the Cabin: Plan on trying some of the hikes from the cabin referenced in the hiking guide on this web page. Zion National park is amazing and Zion Canyon offers amazing hiking and views but the park can get crowded. The hikes from the cabin are a way to see some of the amazing views without the crowds.
Cabin Water: Water is very valuable in the high desert. The water for the cabin water tank is transported from a well 2-miles away. You should have plenty of water for your stay but conservation is greatly appreciated. The water is potable but can sometimes have a slight tint.
Zion National Park: The park has become very popular which means crowds. The east side of the park is less crowded than the west side. The drive through the park is beautiful. Most of the year, to access Zion canyon, you are required to take the free shuttle buses from the visitor’s center. Try to get there early because the parking lots fill up fast. If the lots are full you may be required to park in Springdale where some lots charge $20 to park. On your way to the visitor’s center from the East side you can look for parking at the mouth of Zion Canyon and catch the free shuttle from there. You can also check for parking at the Zion Human History Museum.
Firepit: There is a firepit available at the cabin. The high desert is typically very dry so please do not leave fires unattended. Make sure to douse fires with water and/or dirt when not attended. If fire restrictions are in place, fires at the cabin will be prohibited.
Bugs: There are typically not a lot of bugs, but No-See-Ums (midges), can be present from late May through mid to late June and some Mosquitoes from mid to late June through early July. I recommend bringing a long sleeve T-shirt to have as an option. Evenings and nights are typically cool with warm days.
Rattlesnakes: Although fairly rare to see, it is Rattlesnake country, so be respectful of snake space if you come in contact with one. Your best bet is to stay clear and do not mess with a rattlesnake. If you don’t bother them they won’t bother you.
Dirt Roads: Access to the cabin is via a dirt road (2 miles) and when it rains, navigating through the ranch can be difficult. Please drive carefully. The dirt roads are not very wide, so please follow the posted speed limits for safety and to keep dust to a minimum.
Bryce Canyon National Park: If you are staying a few extra days, Bryce Canyon National Park is just about an hour and 15 minutes away. Bryce offers more amazing and very different views than Zion. With the cabin as your home base, you can always get up early for a full day at Bryce and plan on being back at the cabin for a relaxing night.
North Rim of Grand Canyon: The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is about 1 hour and 20 minutes away. If you are staying extra days with The cabin as your base, The North Rim is another great option to explore.
Zion Ponderosa Resort (click for link): The Zion Ponderosa resort offers additional recreational opportunities. You can pay at the front desk for use of the pool, hot tubs, miniature golf and showers. A $10 fee at the front desk of the resort gets you access to the pools, hot tubs, showers, recreation room, tennis and basketball courts. A $5 fee gives you access to the shower facilities if you would like to take a nice long shower after a long day of hiking. They also have zip lining and rock wall for the kids, horseback riding and much more. They also offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. The resort has a small convenience store available that may have some items you forgot to bring. The recreation room offers water shoes and neoprene socks for rental if you plan to visit the Narrows and did not bring shoes that can get wet.
